Jimmy Forsyth, the photographer who took gritty portraits of city life in Newcastle, died last week at the age of 95. Take a look at just a few highlights from his career, shot over a period of 50 years, as he framed a lasting portrait of the northern, working-class community he was part of….

«Katherine Jenkins in Concert»,
Βασ. 210-72.82.333

John Updike was born in Shillington, a small town in eastern Pennsylvania, the son of a maths teacher and a saleswoman. ‘I loved Shillington not as one loves Capri or New York, because they are special,’ he later wrote, ‘but as one loves one’s own body and consciousness, because they are synonymous with being’. His mother encouraged him to write, but had thwarted literary ambitions of her own; when asked about her son’s fame in later years, she replied: ‘I’d rather it had been me’

‘They both set out to make sure that France was never the same again’: In his book Alain Duhamel points out the startling parallels between Nicolas Sarkozy and Napoleon – and their marriages to Carla Bruni and Empress Josephine
Small men. Big ideas. Glamorous wives. The similarities between Nicolas Sarkozy and Napoleon are uncanny – and now have been explored in a book by France’s foremost political commentator.
